Final Expense Insurance With No Medical Exam — How It Works

One of the biggest advantages of final expense insurance is that most policies do not require a medical exam. For many seniors — especially those with health conditions that might disqualify them from traditional life insurance — this is a game-changer.

How No-Exam Policies Work

Instead of a full medical exam with blood draws and physical measurements, final expense insurance uses a simplified underwriting process. This typically means answering a short health questionnaire — usually 8 to 12 yes-or-no questions about your medical history.

Questions typically cover things like whether you've been diagnosed with certain conditions, whether you've been hospitalized recently, and whether you use specific medications. Based on your answers, the carrier makes a decision — often the same day.

Two Types of No-Exam Policies

Simplified Issue policies ask health questions but skip the exam. If your health history is reasonably good — even if you have managed conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or COPD — you'll likely qualify. These policies typically offer immediate, full coverage from day one.

Guaranteed Issue policies ask no health questions at all. If you're within the eligible age range (usually 50 to 85), you're approved — period. The trade-off is that these policies usually have a 2-year waiting period before the full death benefit kicks in. If you pass away during that period, the policy returns your premiums plus interest rather than the full benefit.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you can qualify for a simplified issue policy, that's almost always the better choice — you get full coverage immediately and typically pay lower premiums. Guaranteed issue is best for people who have serious health conditions that would prevent them from qualifying through any other route.
